Lobbyists look at all of the bills written for Youth Legislature, said Senate Lobbyist Abi Young of Wetumpka. If a lobbyist likes one of the bills, they promote it by making signs or fliers. They also lobby against bills that they don’t support. Young said the Senate lobbyists are currently supporting SB26, which is about making birth control pills available over the counter. They are also working on killing SB7, which seeks to raise the drinking age to 25.
House Lobbyist Hannah White is lobbying against HB16, which is the elimination of athletic scholarships. The House lobbyists decided to go against this bill, because some students cannot afford college and can only attend through athletic scholarship. That opportunity should not be taken away. It isn’t right to crush the dreams of young athletes, said White.
